String theory

sorry science bods its not what you think!!!

I just a have a string problem!

I bought some la bella 2001 hard tension flamenco strings (black trebs)
and I began restringing. I got all the way up to the A string and I thought
'hang on this doesn't feel right', it felt particularly thick more like an E. It also seemed hard work to get it to tune to A. I suddenly decided that this must be the E and that the A was in the E packet, but alas there was another E!!!!! 2 strings exactly the same! I called the shop and they said to come back and they'd give me a replacement A. so I went to the shop and got a single replacement A but I'm pretty sure its an E again!!!!!!!! LAME!!! I noticed as soon as left the shop but didnt want to go back in. If indeed this is an A then I had an A already and didnt need a replacement so would have looked a bit stupid!!

I haven't tried the new "A" yet and wanted to know if Es and As are ever exactly the same size!???

I'm pretty sure every E and A I've strung in the past (alot) have been slightly different in thickness and feel, and the A has thinner coils.

is it possible that this second A is still an E and that la bella shipped a dud batch with 2 bottom Es in every pack?? or does this set always have A nd E that look feel the same??

any ideas??....or theories??

Stu

Amongst the strings I've used, A and E were NEVER the same size.

As the diameter of the string determines the pith of the string at a certain tension I don't think such strings exist.

If you're really sure they are the same size I'd go and get another brand.

Well Stu,

In the humblest London tradition, I would go back to his shop with a sawn-off shotgun and pointing at him say in the most respectful voice...

Would you kindly re-string the A string in any guitar you have here while I watch.

Kray twins...can't beat 'em!

cheers,

Ron
