Zyrab - are there any other flamenco pieces or world music that sound anything at all like it ?   You are logged in as Guest

Zyrab - are there any other flamenco...

Hi all,

I absolutely love Zyrab.

Paco is from another planet to have come up with that.

Are there any other artists (not confining myself to flamenco) or links you could share that helped influence or shape his musical development to create such a brilliant fusion ?

As always - TIA

Best,
Joe

That is a Mahavishnu classic. Paco added a few new chords and the Arabic style theme.

Also Vicente Amigo has recycled that arpeggio for a gazzillian pieces. That Roma thing is like Spain meets Mahavishnu. But also many buleria use a half-time intro with that pattern. And it is practically standard now since Paco also used the pattern for cancion de amor, it is practically “traditional” at this point. I remember Gerardo teaching it as an exercise in Encuentro. More recently I discovered one of my FAvorite Antonio Rey Boleros is actually a revamp of Mclaughlin’s Electric Dreams or whatever it is called.

Wow - had no idea Paco got it from Mahavishnu - at least partially.

Going from listening to Paco back tothe Mahavishnu origins was for me a bit of a letdown - I feel Paco really, really evolved it and did it far more tastefully - which is expected I suppose. I'm not sure whether Paco actually improvised that solo, or composed it more slowly as one would a falsetta (of course for a genius they can compose in real time - but you know what I mean - how much time was spent composing, hours and hours vs realtime when playing with the backing)

I would love to listen to some of the original Arabic music (both traditional and modern, if that exists) that uses similar scales as Paco has in Zyrab. Can anyone provide some artist names or links ?

As always - TIA - especially to Ricardo - who is truly a wealth of information and so generously shares it at no cost : )
