destroyed strings?

I changed the strings recently on my Conde, they just seemed to go dead overnight having played a gig that weekend.
I noticed that the basses just fell off whith all the fret lines imprinted the whole way up the string length of the fingerboard. They just collapsed into folds.
I've never come accross this before and wondered if anyone could explain why this should be?

Cheers
Jim.
