Diego del Morao solo videos, finally!!!

The man!!!! Son of Moraito...

Again, not the best audio quality, but he is so good. If you listen closely and you know this guitarist, you know the magic is there. It's probably a dry lift from the soundboard with very little ambiance. One of those sets that I have a strong feeling would sound much greater in person. Regardless, it's fabulous to see him...

You might recognize falsetas from his appearances on CDs and other videos from YouTube. So innovative with rhythm, harmony, technique etc... with roots in his father of course and that great Jerez flavour. This made my day.

Dumb bunny here had no idea he was Moraito's son. And he doesn't look much like him. But he sounds incredible. Amazing aire. He just has the thing, you know that indefineable something.

I was thinking about whether it's an advantage to grow up in an environment like that. Moraito is just about my favourite player - it's an awful lot to live up to.

On the other hand think of growing up listening to that quality of flamenco every day so that it's really embedded in your musical memory, meeting all those amazing artists..... yeah OK, I'd choose that!

Beautiful - he's certainly got the magic. Loved the Solea por bulerias...

Does anyone know which artists/albums he has recorded with so far and if he is releasing his own album?

Ooohh, so great! Thx alot Conrad Its cool how he re-arranges his own falsetas. Even if he hasnt a Solo CD out, at least there is an idea how it will sound.

Ps: i thought some palmeros were dancing the teletubby dance??

HaHa!
Great, Conrad!!

I saw him on "A Compás" (Ondajerez) two or three years ago playing in one of the peñas and was pretty amazed.

I know a local guy (Aberdeen) who looks the exact double of him!
(I don't mean just looks "a bit" like him.)
He doesn't play guitar though...

Great stuff Conrad.

cheers,

Ron

Ron, you lucky old sod! I remember you telling us that. He is definitely the guitarist that a lot of people are likely to appreciate, tradionalists and modernists, or as Ricardo says, Flamencos!! His other appearances on YouTube are just so fantastic, with La Macanita etc... I love this man. It looks like he has a bit of the personality of his father, too. I forgot to add these videos to the post, with Diego Carrasco, Diego Amador on piano etc...:

(Carrasco tries to get him to sing here, pretty funny, although Carrasco is a bit of weirdo, haha)

No matter, get your picture taken with him, it'll be perfect for the intro to your Metodo de Flamenco Golfo!

Ramirez... You can also cross-reference on Flamenco-World, DeFlamenco and Flamenco-Connection but here is a slightly incomplete list of appearances Diego has made on albums, sometimes just a track or two, sometimes much more:

http://esflamenco.com/bio/en10367.html

Everything I've ever heard him play is a delight, but I would recommend these very strongly:

La Macanita's "La Luna de Tomasa"
Montse Cortes' "La Rosa Blanca"
La Tana's "Tu Ven a Mi"
La Susi's "Agua de Mayo"
Potito's "Barrio Alto"
Arcangel's "La Calle Perdia"
Diego el Cigala's "Picasso en mi ojos"
Nina Pastori's "Canailla"
Jose Merce's "Lio"

He also appears on albums with Argentina, a newer one with Israel Paz, Lole Montoya, and Vicente Soto which are all pretty good. I obviously like everything in flamenco, so it's difficult for me to narrow it down for you!! You can tell he is in very high demand as an accompanist.

Finally, Diego appears on El Pele's CD released last week, which by the way, is very good.

Let me know if you have any questions about those albums, and for anybody who's interested, I have a couple bootlegs of Diego by himself and with Chano Lobato, Enrique and Estrella Morente.

There was mention of a solo CD last year around this time, but I guess he's still working on it.

Hi Conrad,
I had a look for the post but couldn't find it.
I remember asking Ricardo was this in a weird key or something.

I found the original track I taped off the program.

Gosh, do you know that this was FOUR years ago!
(The file date is 23 Sept 2004)

Times passes, eh?

cheers,

Ron

Cool, Ron! Thanks!!! I don't recognize any of that stuff. He's always so clean with a big sound, particularly on those bass wires. I like the chromatic triplet rasgueado... fun lick. I never get tired of him. I will try to upload a few rare tracks I have of him. Stay tuned...

He seems such an easy-going, down to earth and modest guy.
I like how he says things like, "Three years ago I was buying the albums of the people I'm now playing with!"

Interesting that Moraito didnt want him to be a guitarist or if he wants to be a musician, he should play an other instrument

and....

who said this??

quote:

They say guitarists are usually frustrated cantaores...

I'm not exactly sure Arash, but I think Paco de Lucia said something like that (in a kinda joking manner) in one of his early interviews.
In Paco's case I believe he actually did want to be a singer!

cheers,

Ron

Not just Paco feels that way, it is not really a joke. In many cases, the guitarists actually DO SING! And vice versa, you find lots of singers who can play a little guitar. I personally love to sing, but I just don't like the sound of my voice when i hear it! My fingers seem to be able to get the sound I want out of the guitar, but my voice can't do the same. Some of my best friends are singers, and their fingers are just not coordinated enough to play guitar as good as they can sing. Such is life I guess.

yes, i remember he said that he would have given everything to be able to sing (in the documentary when they were talking about his time with camaron).....but at the end of the documentary, he said something like ..." we guitarists have a very good life and you should not believe anything negative i said during the documentary"

Ok...so......if even good guitarists are frustrated cantaors......what am i then? ....i must be a totally depressive loser wannabee frustrated castagnette player ....
