To Kate

Hi Kate,

I thought you might know or be able to find out for me what make of guitar Juan Habichuela plays on his new CD 'Una guitarra en Granada'?
It's one of the purest/finest sounding flamenco guitars I've heard.

Make sure both you and Harold enjoy a great New Year.

Cheers
Jim

PS Anyone else know, please chip in.

RE: To Kate (in reply to Jim Opfer

I dont have this CD yet ( the wish list just gets longer) but if anyone does have it flamenco guitarists often credit the guitar makers on their CDs. I just did a google about this CD and it is so annoying that no-one mentions where it was recorded nor the producer never mind what guitar. I doubt it was recorded in Granada, still hope the guitar was from Granada. I'll ask Marina if I see her over the next few days. She got some very nice comments on her Tangos de Grana'.

Hope you had a good Christmas Jim
Saludos
Kate

ps Pimiento, if you're reading this hope to see you there we sneak into the square via the back streets of San Mateus and get right close to the left hand side of stage where the benches are. Trying to get there from the main road is a nightmare of crushed people. Dont forget the grapes !!!

Hi Jim,
I don't know the instrumental details of that album (which is great), but this may help narrow it down:

Juan plays guitars by three makers; José López Bellido, Juan Miguel Carmona (his nephew) and Rafael Moreno - all from Granada. These three were mentioned on his second album and elsewhere, and you see them in photos. I get the impression that the first of these is his regular axe. (You see him visit the shop in the 'Flamenco Clan' film).

Also bear in mind that four of the tracks (the ones with the older singers) were recorded ten years before the rest, so there may have been a different instrument there. Or maybe not.

Now we'll wait to get the inside information on which guitar he played on which track...

RE: To Kate (in reply to Estevan

Harold tells me that Juan played a Conde with woooden pegs when he recorded Estrella's first two albums.

Will see if I can find out more when I am out and about in the New Year.

I just had my parents ( in their mid 70's) here for two weeks so no late nights for us. Luckily Emilio's school had a party which began at 7 pm so we made that but it's been pretty much a flamenco free Christmas, apart from all the presents I gave them.

Now back to my rioja

And Yes Ailsa would be lovely to have you and Dave out here next new year. In fact everyone should come !!!!!

I'll try my best but i remember the crush last time. Even san mateus was like the black hole of calcutta. They are letting off a million euros of fireworks this year which will be insane. If I dont see you there, then will squeeze into Eshivira later

Sadly that info is not on the sleeve notes, but the amazing guitar sound you are listening to is the Carmona!!
By the way, Orchando is doing a free guitar course 6 hours per week during May. Send me pm for details after new year. Happy holidays everyone

No...but 95 % sure. I spent the afternoon with Juan Carmona a couple of weeks ago and his guitars do not sound like the Moreno or Bellido (both of which i have had).
They have an incredible projection and are really flamenco. I am well aware of how good a player Habichuela is on any guitar but that recording has the Carmona sound.
Also i tried out Juan Habichuela (nieto)s' Carmona which was truly amazing!! He implied that some of the best instruments went to the family and that uncle played one most of the time. That sound is no accident, you have to play them to believe them....

When was that ? Last year ?? We were there with lots of children, there was loads of space in that corner. Finding that back way in has saved us from the crowds for the last five years. But if I dont see you there, then we'll have a copa in the Eshavira. If you ge there straight after the fireworks its fine, if you dont get there till 3 am it's pretty crowded.

I ask because I went to see Carmona a few years ago and tried one of his guitars, a negra with fancy African wood, but it wasn't all that special. I'll listen to the CD again tomorrow and identify the tracks that caught my attention. Might be that will help track it down. Sounded like a really bright open Sobrinos de Esteso with crisp, musical and clear voice. But the photo on the cover looked like a familiar old headstock, Simplicico (spelling?) nice wave forms with very beautiful aesthetic. I know Carmona modelled his guitars on Simplicico but I don't think the Carmona headstock is a copy.

Well recently he has been producing some blancas which are exceptional. The simplicio on the cover is not the same as the guitar in the interview Arash posted. I have until recently always rated Francisco Manuel Diaz and Rafeal Moreno as 2 of the best makers in town. Francisco Manuel Diaz in particular has the advantage of also being a player as well as a luthier and he sells his instruments at the highest price (which i think is well deserved). I play their instruments and they are good friends but I have to admit.....I wish i had the cash right now for a Carmona!

No, 'Una guitarra en Granada' has Juan Habichuela on the cover with a Simplicio guitar, at least the head stock is to Simplicio design. Inside photo shows a Bellido with Juan's initials on the head stock. I was wondering however, what guitar he actually played on the recordings.
Fantastic sounding guitar on Taranta 'Valgame Dios' and Tientos 'Las cortinitas de mi alcoba'. Clear, bright and with a throaty voice.

Are you sure that is a Simplicio guitar on the cover of Juan Habichuela's CD? The headstock looks to be a Juan Miguel Carmona guitar as does the concentric circles around the soundhole. I have a Juan Miguel Carmona blanca to which I compared the foto on the cd and the headstock looks to be the same. I also have seen Juan Carmona El Camborio from Ketama (the one with the beard) playing a Juan Miguel Carmona negra.

As to what guitar Juan Habichuela is playing, who knows. You'd have to ask him. Mostly he is seen playing his Bellido guitars.

Track 7, Taranta 'Tarantos del tio Enrique' great sound and Track 8, 'Si te vas' rich chocolate bass like celophane.

You are absolutely correct Vasileos, it's Juan Miguel Carmona. Thing is his headstock is modelled on a Simplicio. Read it in a article a few minutes ago.
I'd be interested to know about your blanca, sound, playability etc?

Can you tell me what is the article you read? Is it online? The only thing I ever found about Juan Miguel Carmona is from the Zavaletas website.

As to the sound and playability, these things can be so subjective. It's easy to play, action is great and the "pulsation" is strong- meaning it isn't as soft as say Condes and a Reyes I have played. I am sure this varies from guitar to guitar. It's loud and bright. I tried a Devoe once and it reminds me of that guitar, but a bit louder and definitely brighter (of course this is by memory and time changes everything). I have been playing a negra from a Granada luthier for a few years and it's also loud and bright, definitely not classical sounding. The Carmona blanca stands right up to it and is brighter being a blanca, but also has great basses. It's a great guitar. The body size is smaller like many Granada guitars are. I have never tried a Plazuelo or a Manuel Bellido. I have tried a Raya Pardo and a Jose Bellido, both were not as bright and punchy as my Carmona.

The Carmona has a 12-hole bridge and an unusual shaped foot where the neck goes into the body on the inside. Hard to describe. The Carmona is not the lightest blanca I have ever picked up, more like a Conde.

Hope this gives you some help in your quest for information. Good luck!

I have all the back issues of Guitar International magazine. One has an article on the very young JMC. I'll try to get it scaned and send it to you.
I want to know the make of guitar played on the CD. Probably JMC but I want to be sure. I can't ask him because I'm in Scotland and have no way of doing that so any help from those who have access would be apreciated.

Cheers
Jim.

Just found this vid of Juan playing granaina, with nice tremolo in 4 at 0:44.

I made a tremolo in 4 for granaina a long time ago, and was always worried about using it because some folks claim granaina and others toque libre have to be a loose 3 beat, so this was exciting to find!

Sorry it is not really related but I was looking for his vids thanks to this thread.

Thanks Ricardo, nice one. I can't make out the guitar but pretty fancy with the black golpeadores.
You probably found this video also;

This is a nice open Conde probably Sobrinos de Esteso. Different sound from current Conde from Felipe V.
