Gerardo Nuñez goes classical

On wednesday 21st November last week, Gerardo Nuñez performed with the orchestra of the Granada Royal conservatory of music. This was to celebrate the prize winning works in the "Composition contest on themes by Gerardo Nuñez" from the Tchaikovsky state conservatory of Moscow. The evening was a colaboration between the Russian and Spanish conservatories featuring soloists from both Russia and Spain. Due to poor publicity the Manuel de Falla auditorium was only half full but Gerardo received a very enthusiastic response from the mainly well dressed "classical" audience. Gerardo played an introduction "yerma" followed by the buleria "siempre es tarde" and then his solea por buleria with the bottom 3 strings dropped a semitone.
The classical musicians on stage were looking with mouths and eyes wide open which was fun to see.
Following the solos, the young 22 year old classical guitarist Dimitry Borodaev performed the prize winning composition with orchestra. It was great to hear some of the themes accompanied by strings, bassoons and kettle drums. This is quite a significant event both for Flamenco and Gerardo. Firstly it shows that flamenco is now considered a serious music form worthy of classical study, just as Gershwin made jazz "respectable". Secondly it showcases the complexity of Gerardos composition. Enhorabuena maestro!!

Fantastic! Wish I were back in Granada - sounds like a brilliant show. Kate, Simon, anyone else in Granada, any of you go, too?

Sure I went to the concert, thats how I got the photo! As i said it was poorly advertised and if i hadn't been having a flamenco conversation with a guitarist friend that morning, I would have missed it. I didn't see many other flamencos there either.

I dont know about links to the entries. The first prize winner was composer Anna Muzychenko
