I'm quite relieved to read your post - when I read the thread title I thought it was a drug reference...... Am a bit worried about what that says about the way I think.....

Hmm, if you're around Albuquerque a lot, I know Ottmar Liebert's said on his blog that he just took his guitar to Keith Vizcarra for repairs a lot bigger than your crack, and he seemed pretty content. Not sure where Vizcarra is, but Ottmar is in Santa Fe, so I figure that might be useful :) I know someone on the foro isn't likely to take Ottmar's advice, but then again, the guitar's a DeVoe Negra so Vizcarra probably isn't that bad

theres a guy in san diego, at a place called BLUES GUITAR or something like that. anyways, many flamencos here in LA/OC have gone to this guy for repairs and swear by him...i'll try to find his name..

That is a pretty common crack because of the ebony fingerboard's expanding and contracting. This is the main reason Lester DeVoe is encouraging his clients not to ask for ebony anymore. My Devoe Negra has a non-ebony, rosewoodish type of fretboard(I forget what it is exactly). Kieth Vizcarra is an incredible luthier. His guitars are pretty amazing. He works very slow, but his repair work is top notch. He is in the Sante Fe area. Chusco will have his info.

Agree with Jason - this is common.
I've had a crack beside the fingerboard on my Conde for years and it hasn't grown significantly although in terms of sound I would get it repaired - this would depend on the individual guitar itself and how keen your ear is.

Jason, I would imagine your De Voe fingerboard wood would be Cocobolo Rosewood or Snakewood - these are both reddish in colour.

Like Jason said it is common, and caused by contraction of the ebony. So you can EXPAND the ebony by putting humidity in the guitar case. You will be surprised, but it will "close" the crack. It is also good for the guitar. Also a lot of folks have problem with the frets poking out, same reason. No need to file them, just put some humidity in the guitar case. It will go back to normal in a week or so.

J. Ramirez III thought it was funny how some makers (like Conde) put a support brace under the fingerboard extension as if that could support the thin soundboard from the contraction of the ebony. In vain was his attitude. What he did was to not put glue all across, but only in the middle of that part of the fingerboard, so when the ebony contracts it slides across the top with out pulling on the wood you can see. Basically this crack is not a big concern.
