Cool Rumba Strum (oops, forgot the l...

Hey guys,

Can anyone figure out the way this guy is strumming these rumba chords? The video has three strumming patterns, but I just cannot figure out that first slow one, with the several golpes (using the side of his thumb) above the sound hole within each strum. It is so cool though. Thanks for the help!

I don't know if I'm doing it right, but the slow one seems easy to me.

Down with P

Up with back of P

slight pause

Golpe with P above the strings but at the same time down with i finger.
(you have to twist your wrist to do this)

Up with i finger

Golpe with P ...same as above.

Up with i finger.

I think that's what he's doing, but it's possible that he's adding in an extra stroke here or there.

If you want to see more examples check out the following videos:

At the end of this one... Andre plays it , but the video is out of sinc.

This one has 5 or 6 patterns...I think the first is close to the one above.

Anyway, ain't rumba fun???

I hope this helps.

I teach it over at FT on video slow, if interested. I actually do one with an extra muted stroke too, but Wannabe was close to describing what this guy is doing. You missed and extra "p" golpe (3rd stroke), and the golpe with the fingers on the soundboard (5th stroke). So 8 strokes all together. I agree that this guy does the "real" rumba, just he misses the extra mute or you can't hear it on the vid, but the feel it correct.

So it is:
P down, with golpe fingers below the trebles.
P up (or fingers up is ok too)
P taps above the 6th string, sideways wrist flick.
P taps again as fingers strike down the strings hard, flick of the wrist again.
Fingers bridge the strings and golpe the sound board below the trebles.
Up with index or all fingers.
P tap above as fingers strike down (same as 4th stroke. Here is where the mute should be to be "real" gypsy)
index or fingers up.

For Wannabe, the one you linked is just slap, up down up. But the last up you get a golpe with back of thumb.

First of all, let me thank you for your kind help. I'm not sure I completely understand though.

As for the last one, yes the basic pattern is just a slap - up - down - up, but what I want to figure out is the introduction.

They are muting the strings and playing a very nice pattern before the actual song starts.

It's something like ... slap - up - golpe down- up - 3-stroke ras - down -up - 3 stroke ras....reapeated over and over. I am not sure what they are doing as they play it so fast that I can't get it.

If I try and vocalize the rhythm I hear it's something like..

bom chick a bom chick a pa da dat da da pa da dat da da. (if this makes any kind of sense to you)

this is not the pattern bu t try to practice this

m p m p m p m p down up down up down up down up

then ad

m p (M P P Triplet) m p (M P P) down up (down down up) down up (down down up)

thats a good way to learn to insert thoes fast triplets into the scratching

OK. Thanks. I'll work on that for a while and maybe I'll be able to figure out what they are doing later on.
