TABsites

Does anyone know if there are still active TABsites on the net.
The ones I tried all said something like "acces denied"
I believe the copyright-mafia threatens them real hard now.

Try:

www.ultimate-guitar.com

I'm told the hosters are based in Russia where it is legal to supply tabs, but don't quote me on that!

Well ultimate-guitar works perfect.

Sal's soapbox is too complicated for me. I can't find any tabs there.

One thing I don't understand about this new move to rid the world of anything free, especially TABS, is that most of the TAB I see (for rock, not flamenco) is often wrong, sometimes seriously flawed transcriptions.

I teach and often transcribe material from CDs for students. I wonder...am I in violation of copyright laws? I sure hope the copyright police don't get a fix on me, for the occasional transcription I write up.

Maybe someday soon, it will be illegal to talk about what key a song is in...

Maybe in the future teachers have to pay for the fact that they teach stuff that they didn't write themself.

Inside the cover of one of my official tab books it says:

"Unauthorized copying, arranging, adapting, recording or public performance is an infringement of copyright. Infringers are liable under the law."

I guess this pretty much covers everything... even buskers who play other people's songs on the street. So next time you play one of Paco's soleas in public, you better get permission.

I wonder if Grisha had to get permission to play covers of other people's songs on his album?

mind you, I heard if the artist is dead for a certain amount of time, the copyright doesn't apply anymore.

You can transcribe and use EXCERPTS for teaching purposes, but to write down an entire piece under copyright, on paper, without out permission, is illegal. If you write out a piece for a student in it's entirety, yes it is illegal. If the piece is published in print form, you as a teacher should encourage the student to purchase the score. If not, it is fine to work on EXCERPTS. Technically, you can teach only "excerpts" on a weekly basis until the entire piece is learned in small chunks, and it is legal. Falsetas are totally legal and perfect for what the laws allow. Copyright on works recorded after 1972 (and any older stuff renewed since then) is, as I recall, 50 years AFTER the death of the composer. So for guys younger (died after) than Nino Ricardo, NADA is public domain until after 2022, more or less.

But, WHO REALLY CARES??????? Copyright business is more to protect little guys from getting their tunes ripped off by Brittany Spears, or whoever that makes BIG bucks with little talent. Teaching kids guitar riffs is no big deal.

I think it are even 70 years, at least here in Germany. Maybe it varies from country to country.
