Antonio Marin Montero?

So my friend has this flamenco guitar, kind of beat up but plays good, sounds great. I know he is well renowned for classical guitars, and the new ones look expensive. This old flamenco guitar has a very faded lable looks like 1970. Super light, peg head blanca, with a wood golpeador on treb side, clear plastic up top. Here is the weird thing...18 frets! The high note is Bb!! Intonation is perfect though.

Any ideas of what it is worth? Not really anxious to sell just curious.

Hey Ricardo,

I have a 1990 Antonio Marin Montero blanca that I acquired about 3 years ago for $5.5K. It was kind of musty and dusty when I first got it. Allegedly it was owned by someone who did not play flamenco and he just decided to sell it because it was just laying around and not getting played. I think that he may have kept it under his bed because inside were a few dust bunnies and it had a musty fragrance. I vacuumed it out and gave it a couple of shots of Febreeze [for real!]. This allowed the fragrance of the wood to come out and as I played it, it opened up very nicely and has an excellent tone. It looks a little used, but it is not banged up or scarred and there are no cracks or repairs. It is light weight and very comfortable to hold and play [It is definitely one of my favorites]. It has machine tuners.

I am not an expert at pricing guitars, but I have bought, traded, and sold a whole bunch of them [I am not a dealer]. My best guess is that the A.M. Montero that you described would be worth between $4K and $5K depending on the market and the level of interest a buyer would have in a vintage flamenco guitar.

It sounds like a sweet little guitar.

How can i recognize Antonio Marin Montero & José Marin Plazuelo 's original guitars from fake guitars? (New Guitars. not used ones)

I live in a country in which from every famous Luthier there is a fake guitar..

Show us pictures as a start.

Here is Diego with an 18 fretter. As good as he is he could never play Entre Dos Aguas on that thing

For all the high-handedness of the classicals toward the flamencos, they must admit that Diego is a better mugger than Julian Bream.

But for sheer athleticism there's no match for Pavel Steidl, though I notice on Youtube he's toned it down a bit lately.

So score one for the flamencos, one for the classicals.

Diago is my hero. I think he is mugging cause there is a camera, kinda like a big FU, I like that he was a lone wolf not part of the system kind of guy, but then again that could have been a schtick as well. Guess we will never know.

I havnt the experience to know but find his playing understated and true most of the time but then he knows how to work an audience, I've seen this more then once where he is giving the cantor and the crowd jelos (?) mid cord.

Perhaps it is how he seems to be loving it all, life, his guitar, and he could give a rats ass if there are only eighteen frets...

Lohan, you may take a look at the pictures and infos in websites like Solera flamenca:
https://www.flamencoguitarsforsale.net/guitarras-flamencas-vendidas/

Or like this online museum:
https://www.flamenco-guitar.net/museum/
Or just through Google:

In general the guitars of Plazuelo and Marin Montero are made at very high standards and completely shellacked, so they are not guitars I am aware of frauds or scam, at least in Europe.

The guitars made by Antonio, Plazuelo and Bellido from the eighties are different from ther early guitars made in the seventies. Those first guitars are very traditional and light Granada guitars: well made but quite essential, while the late guitars are more modern and refined.

Sounds pretty shady. If someone can’t show pictures stay away, it is that simple. Unless what you are saying is someone claims to have guitars (not for sale) to check out and you think they might be fake, then you need to go through online catalogues and look at details like labels headstock, tie block, etc.

My Blanca was made by his grandson Juan Antonio Correa Marín.
I paid $3K for it and I am very happy with it.
I would guess that guitar is worth $5K

Juan Montero was the great luthier from Cordaba, as good or better than Reyes. Who is Antonio?

Antonio Marin is central to Granada building traditions.

RE: Antonio Marin Montero? (in reply to Ricardo

I understand the sarcasm but there are few doubts Antonio is in the handful of the best in Spain, particularly for classical guitars.
His connection with Robert Bouchet gave a new international appeal to the Granada guitar making tradition and draw a new generation of makers.
Antonio M. Montero and Manuel Bellido used to work together in the late sixties and seventies for other famous makers outsourcing to them. As you know that’s the way it works and that’s also the way Manuel Reyes started as well.
Without Bellido and Montero you wouldn’t have makers like Raya Pardo or Pepe Bellido or Plazuelo, Paco Marin.
Nowadays the flamenco guitars made by Antonio are not seen in the hands of the main pro-players but this doesn’t mean too much.
