Another compas machine

I was recommended a new compas machine by a spanish professional flamenco, who wasn't an interested party from what I could see. He seemed really impressed.

I tried the free offering on my Android mobile. https://www.flamencocompas.es/en/home/

I think it costs about 10Es for a full version.

I rejected it for a couple of reasons but would be interested to hear comments from anyone else. They talk about sound quality, volume and 100% real sound

I'll stick with my current free choices but I still haven't found one that does everything I want

[Happy to pay 10Euros if I find it.]

I use: A compas, compasflamenco and Another Flamenco compas app, and between them I'm happy. But I'd prefer one that combines all their features

Wow, Nigel, so mysterious

I downloaded the demo version. Checked things out, seems to have lots of options for different accompaniment, as well accomp. sub-styles, like for Bulerias: de Jerez; al Golpe; en 12.

I notice two things that might have incurred your displeasure - First, the relatively narrow range of speeds, though the settings seem adjusted to what occurs in practice from experience. However, it is not suitable for slower practice I guess which is indeed a bummer. Swim with the pros or die

Second, while the sounds are real, it is obvious they are recorded at just one speed (probably at the default that it gives you when you choose a palo), and the rest is just digitally manipulating it to speed it up or slow it down to cover the range. And while doing so, the perceived pitch changes a bit too, so they did not hold the pitch when time-compressing/dilating; on the other hand, it is not pure time manipulation as the pitch changes are too small for the range.

EDIT: Hmm, a third thing - the range for a given palo changes with different accomps chosen. How weird. So it is actually not as narrow as it seems.

Is that it? I think it is still worth it. Price of two lattes. But I am not very experienced in flamenco apps - what is it that you noticed?

I think it sucks, sorry. I don't know if sound is bad because the guy was using the app while recording his voice over it, but it was bad or it did the app a big disservice. Either way it still sucked to my ears. I used to sample stuff from cd's, and now those samples are all over the web. Those buleria palmas sampled from a Miguel Poveda cd, me... and other samples I did years ago. I actually put all that stuff on an old flamenco website by a todkk something like that I think. Guy is/was a great player. Now I just use a metronome with no accents. It's the best way I think. It helps me with being aware of the compas, I got to know where all the accents go, contras, etc... Just a different way of managing compas. My two cents man, peace...

Well I just paid the man $10 for the app. Or more like I paid Apple 10 dollars and the guy gets A small cut.

Like MT, I mainly use metronome, and occasionally dr Compas to play along with in place of using a solo compas cd. Figured I’d get this app because I’m bored with the same variations that Dr compas offers. Probably won’t use it much anyway.

I’ve checked it out for all of five minutos so far, the sound is not as bad as the YouTube video, but neither is it exactly stellar Right from the app either. Some samples are better than others. Definitely not as good as dr compas sound but at least it has some additional variations.

I vaguely recall those samples on Toddk’s site and wouldn’t know what to do with them!

Just noticed one of the samples of palmas sordas por bulerias sounds like it came straight off of Vicente’s El Mandaito! Some of these samples are pretty cheesy sounding. Like the cajon. But If you click on the “+” button to get more, those Seem to be better.

That was number one. I communicated with Jose and he offered that if I wanted a low bpm for alegrias then use Solea instead.

I also feel the interface showing the beats could be better.

As you say targeted at the higher level player which he and the guy recommending it, Paco Costa certainly are.

For sure its only six (cheap place where I live

) cups of coffee but I'll get more feedback before I buy.

A good post. Same here. I'm not a fan of these flamenco compas apps and flamenco metronomes.
What we need is steady beats only. A simple and modest metronome will do it. Even with no accents because it saves time. Waiting for the next accent is annoying and you lose 2 or 3 seconds everytime.

Well having used the app a little i would say save your money. The sound is mostly not very good. Just get Dr Compás if you don’t have it already.

MT, no idea if the samples are still there I just remember from back in the day.

Compás tracks are not all a waste of time for me personally. I use Dr. Compás for example to check if I have some rhythm I’m learning correct or if I’m quadro. Because I can still be in time with the click of a metronome but feel the rhythm wrong.

man this is the last one i did... hahaha they helped at the time. I used Wavelab to create samples. If anything it was good practice on how to work my audio workstation.
