Dangerous Curves (New Cutaway Blanca)

I'll post a video with sound after the strings stretch a bit more.

Nice, you went all out. Extra points for Port Orford.

Really good and balanced sound, I also like the cutaway more than the more commonly(relatively) found sharp cutaways. This one doesn't sound like it has a cutaway at all.

Strangely, cutting away doesn't seem to affect the sound at all. I find this to be one of my best sounding and easiest playing guitars.

beside the nice heel shape, i really like that rosette.

two questions:

does the PO cedar have any sort of dye? it really is much darker than the spruce
can you disclose the radius on your back? from the pic it seems rather strong.

No dye. I used different naturally colored shellacs on the soundboard vs the rest. The one on the soundboard is called Platina. The one on the rest is called Ruby. I think the color depends on what tree the lac bugs are on.

You can see more pictures at http://edluthier.com/blog/dangerous-curves-new-flamenca-blanca including a close-up of the rosette. (Click on the little pictures for big ones.)

I do the lengthwise curvature of the back by eye, a little different each time. It is not made on a spherical dish; I create it as I plane the edges of the sides. So I can't really tell you what it is. I think some of the photos from the sides that I have on my website will show that it is not really as strong as it appears in the above photo.

thanks. so far i only used pale shellac on spruce and cypress and buttonlac on rosewoods. was a bit afraid of getting a patchy finish on lighter woods. cypress, as you know, gets a lot darker than spruce with the polish on it - a thing of beauty, really.

i made the back fitting on my first guitars with only a plane, resorting to trial and error, and eventually got the rims and back to get along, but a radius dish really speeds the process and makes it idiot proof (a frequent necessity of mine), but OTOH it looks a bit sterile, for lack of better words. nitpicking, of course.

Making backs and soundboards sections of a sphere just seems wrong to me. I like the traditional way. And I like wood shavings much more than I like sanding dust.
