New Guitar arrived with damage

It is a beautiful guitar, but it was shipped in a cardboard box wrapped in a little bit of that white plasticky 'cloth' they use. perhaps UPS were not kind to it during it's flights to France, Germany and finally the UK.

1) Varnish 'crunched' for about 2cm at the base/front join area

2) varnish 'dent' 6mm on one side where it joins the rear

3) Black Varnish looks to have melted somehow and run across the 5th fret area of the fingerboard, leaving a rough patch by the side of the 5th fret next to the 6th string

4) Several tiny pock marks in the varnish on two small areas of the front of the guitar either side of where the fretboard joins.

5) Black and gold tuners rather than white and gold, but may be due to the guitar being the 2015 model. (Label inside and warranty certificate state this is a 'Cipre 2015')

The guitar smells superb - ok, yes, I sniff new guitars.

So far, though, the sound is amazing. Leaves my cheap plywood classical standing in the dressing room.

I could instantly return it for a full refund, but the chances of getting one here with less damage seem slim.

Is the varnish (guessing polyeurethane from the feel of it) easy to fix?

How about the problem on the neck at the 5th fret? (Handy for finding the 5th fret since it's so rough there *coughs*)

Happy to provide pics if I can figure out how to do that here/ am allowed.

Looking at your initial posts, it appears that you ordered a Francisco Molina through Amazon Spain. I've never heard of Francisco Molina, and I don't know how Amazon Spain operates. I will say, however, that regardless of the make and method of ordering, you, the customer, deserve to receive a new guitar without damage.

You state that the guitar was shipped in a cardboard box wrapped in a little bit of that white plasticky 'cloth.' that seems pretty flimsy for shipment internationally. Was a guitar case provided with the guitar in it, with the cardboard box encasing the guitar case? Or was it just the guitar alone encased in the cardboard box? Either way, I would not accept a damaged guitar.

If it were me, I would return it and get a refund. The question is, who is responsible, Amazon Spain or UPS?

You spent good money, you deserve an undamaged guitar.

Bill

I'd return it. Your description of what it was wrapped in doesn't seem to provide much protection and anyone shipping a guitar internationally should know better. How does varnish melt during travel? I suppose placed near certain heat sources (engine or whatever) but I wouldn't think UPS is in the habit of doing that. Is it possible that it was already there before travel? There shouldn't be much risk involved in guitar shipping if it is done properly and you have every right to expect no damages at all (so far I've never had any trouble with shipping. Only trouble unpacking the guitar with the endless layers of protection that many luthiers rightly use!). I guess the question is who's responsible...

It was just in a cardboard box (the triangular type that guitars sit in) with no additional protection. It seems that's how Amazon ship as the box was sealed all round with Amazon's reinforced logo tape.

I saw a review from someone who got this same guitar from Amazon's 'Warehouse' of returned goods, at a discount, with some similar damage. I'm guessing that one had also made the trip via plane in a cardboard box.

I am surprised that a reasonably expensive guitar would be shipped like that.

Return it as damaged and ask for a refund, then buy in the UK. There are plenty of suppliers here for a decent student guitar.

Don't know which one you ordered but this seller in Sheffield has some on Ebay.

Return it, by all means, you deserve better then that, someone above said they heard of another incident from Amazon, just get a refund before any warrantee runs out
and buy from a reputable dealer. Sorry you had this bad experiencer, a lesson for others though to learn by, cutting corners, trying to save a dollar.

I wouldn't ship a guitar down the street without putting it in a case...

Cheap factory guitars are shipped all over the world in cardboard boxes only.
Do what escribano says and if buying from outside your country find someone you can trust. Dont forget to leave a bad review on Amazon. Thats how Amazon, Ebay etc. works.
I finally. I wish yiu good luck with your future guitar.

Thank you all for your advice.

Started the returns process. Waiting to hear when the courier will collect it, then get my refund and try to find a guitar.

Noticed before returning it that it claims to have a Rosewood bridge, but the one supplied looked very much like black plastic, to match the black plastic tuning pegs. It even had a handwritten card attached from the manufacturer claiming it was Rosewood.

I may be dense, but I think I know black plastic when I see it. *chuckles*

Left a review stating every problem with the packaging/delivery and specifications on Amazon.
