polishing up a piece

hi everyone , just looking around my place its amess with music from all styles all of which i love but cant play ,

any one any ideas on keeping focus on just a few pieces yet , also having fun with other stuff - ive just got back into guitar again but - really find it hard to do anything but dream and noodle.

music from flamenco to nirvana , to R . rabello to G.sanz - really hard to stick to a plan and use a metronome so for the rant bit frustrating i do the same with most things

Maybe stick to one palo, learn bits and pieces from several pieces in that palo and try to string them together in a way that makes sense musically.

sounds like it's in your nature to ramble. nothing wrong with that (unless you want to turn pro)

so if you want to go against your own nature get a flamenco teacher who will hold you accountable for that genre every week

It's a fine trait to be eclectic. But why no metronome for Sanz Nirvana and Rabello??? You need it for all that music too.

I have the same problem staying on track.
I keep wanting to play something Brazilian or Villalobos or Barrios.
My teacher gave me specific exercises and to play only one piece over and over which is a Juan Martin Farruca. It takes focus and discipline and I get really tired playing the same thing over and over, but I feel it is helping my progress and is still far from perfect. I do use a metronome more now and want to start recording myself but never get around to it.

I usually schedule my practice into a couple of sections: warm up, reviewing/practicing old material, working on new material and then allowing some time for noodling. I've always found it helpful to work on a few things non flamenco as it helps in my flamenco playing. At least it gives me a new perspective. I would also agree with the advice to use a metronome. When I started with flamenco, I didn't use one and it was a mistake. When the time came to play for a dancer, my compas was s%#t. I focused on playing along in compas with a metronome and things got much better with my overall playing. Its tough but try to schedule some quality time with your favorite metronome!

You're welcome. I agree, if we aren't really focused on a plan, its just a bunch of notes flying around without much purpose.

In the past few days I have been getting really serious with the metronome and recording. The end result is what I thought, my playing is much worse than i think it is. Even when I think I nailed a passage, I go back and listen to the recording and it just sounds barely intelligible.
I notice the same thing when I have a lesson like yesterday, my teacher sounds so much better then me, well he is really good. It s a little discouraging but also motivating at the same time, lots of work to do.

My goals are to continue steady improvement with all techniques, picado, pulgar, Alazpua, rasgueado, etc. Also to be able to play a piece all the way through with a metronome with out mistakes or stopping, I am getting closer to that one.
