Parentheses in Spanish

Having just received an e-mail from a friend in Córdoba, I notice that he uses ( what I would consider ) extra spaces for parentheses ( like this ).

Is this ( as I presume ) standard usage, could someone tell me please?

I can ask around. Right now I can tell you that there are no extra spaces "inside" parentheses in yesterday's El Pais nor in my RAE dictionary.

Standard usage does not have extra spaces within parentheses. I have never seen it stated as a "rule," but I have read a lot of Spanish, both newspapers and literature, and I have never seen extra spaces within parentheses.

Thanks everybody. I didn’t remember seeing this, but assumed my memory must be playing me up.
