Beginner here! Hello from Southern C...

Hi there,

I'm new to guitar and flamenco! I heard someone playing and thought it was such a beautiful sound that it inspired me to get a guitar not too long ago.

I've been practicing for only 2 months so far for anywhere from 30-60 minutes a day. I've learned some basic open chord shapes and barre chords. Part of the song, Malaguena, and the rhythm for Hotel California. I've also tried working on some right hand techniques that I've seen on youtube (picado, rasgueado, tremolo), but I'm not very good at them.

Someone recommended this forum to me and I thought it would be a great place to start getting more organized with my self teaching or possibly finding an instructor (I live in Orange County).

If you guys have any suggestions for instructors or have any tips for how I should structure my learning progression I would love to hear it.

Hola and welcome!

Tons of great teachers in the North Hollywood/Burbank/Glendale area for some reason....which doesn't help you a ton cus that's a quite a drive lol. In Downey there's Jose Tanaka who would be an amazing teacher, which is a little closer. Then the only guy I know of in the OC is Santiago Martin, I've never heard him play but all the dancer girls from Naranjita flamenco say he's really really good.

If not in person, Skype is an excellent choice and Ricardo on this forum would be the man to ask about lessons, he's a monster player.

Your new to guitar and you chose flamenco??? You don't make life easy on yourself lol
The advice I wish I got when I started is this:
Flamenco is not "pretty spanish guitar music". Flamenco is a bunch of different songs(palos), that are sung, and the guitar came around to accompany these songs and has since taken on a life of it's own. Learn the songs and how to accompany them and it will make the whole "pretty virtuoso guitar stuff" much easier to understand later.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for all the great info!!!

I know I definitely chose a difficult style for a beginner, but a few people have told me that I should stick with what I'm interested in so I don't lose interest.

I think I like the idea of lessons over Skype quite a bit as that could fit into my schedule better, but I will look into Santiago Martin as well.

Thanks again!
