Man, Vicente Amigo's stock has really fallen lately. He used to be all over these lists.

In listing my five all-time favorite flamenco guitarists above (Sabicas, Nino Ricardo, Paco Cepero, Paco de Lucia, and Melchor de Marchena) I neglected to mention my current favorite of all those playing today. In my opinion Paco Pena stands above all others on the circuit today, primarily because his playing is the most traditional.

Miguel, Vicente Amigo may be popular today, but would you really place him among the five all-time greats?

Cheers,

Bill

I might, but the question was about favorites. I think Vicente lost some of his popularity among guitarists with his more recent projects, but noone would doubt his ability as a player. And in concert he plays superb real flamenco, he makes even the cheesy stuff sound awesome.

Paco Pena
Mario Escudero

Good point. I was conflating favorites with greatness, and the two do not necessarily equate.

I would agree, Etta. In my case, Carlos Montoya first turned me on to flamenco in 1960, and although he may not rank among the "greats," I will always appreciate his opening up another musical path for me to enjoy.

I am feeling a little guilty leaving Vicente off. Really, the list needed be longer.

Yeah, there should be the Living and Dead lists. Each should be 7... no, 8! Paco de Lucia should not be eligible for either list, he's actually his own list, yes or no.

Vicente Amigo is definitely one of my favorite guitarists. I also like Nino de Pura a lot... and Tonino. Hey, do rumbas count as flamenco?

Bill, I do greatly admire Paco Pena's carrying the torch of traditional flamenco guitar soloist. As a working musician who usually works alone, I do like seeing people who can carry it with one guitar and no palmas or fretless basses or harmonicas helping them out. I also feel that PP is a meticulous craftsman and very creative within the boundaries he sets for himself.

My favourite guitarists are Moraos.

Juan Morao (because he was Moraito's dad)
Manuel Morao (because he's Manuel Morao)
Moraito (because he's Moraito)
Diego del Morao (because he's Moraito's son)
Pepe del Morao (because he's Manuel Morao's grandson)

As you might have guessed I love the Moraos

That's why the question can be difficult, there's so many greats. If you have to choose only five it makes it also more interesting

Let's not forget about the Parrillas. Manuel Parrilla is such a monster player with great aire. He recently recorded his first solo disc and it's a very fine example of modern Jerez toque. Recently it seems the Jerezanos rule the flamenco guitar world, there are few outsiders...
