Decision time

Hi chicos y chicas. Just asking for some ideas and thoughts.

Back in 2003 I took up flamenco guitar, joined here, and as a musical dimwit got started. The inspiration was finding mi Sevillana, love of my life. And now circumstances have given rise at the ripe old age of 62 to return mi Sevillana (better half) to her country and live happily ever after in Cadiz or Malaga regions (yeah eat your hearts out, it feels great

).

Now I haven't had time to play my guitars for several years but soon I will be sat on my terrace with much more time. However with the cost of transporting, and a need for finance, and to be fair to the wife who will leave much behind I need to be rational.

My 2005 Anders is untouchable. I remember going to Granada and picking it up from the man himself, and a very special little dog

. It goes with me.

But I bought a Valeriano Bernal 1999 Clase F from a working player in Seville. It had a few minor cracks having had a working life but I went to Stephen Hill (who many here will know) and he fixed it up and fitted some great tuners.

I also have an Alhambra 11fc and finally a student guitar Burguet 2f. The latter cost me £800 with a few extras in London in 2003 but I could have bought it at close to half that price had I been savvy. But was in too much of a hurry to listen to the good advice here.

So my question is in current times could I sell any of these and get a worthwhile return? Or can I really say they would be difficult to sell, I'd get little, and that it makes no sense but to transport them (costs a bit)?

Clearly I can't play 4 guitars at once (I can hear from a source near by).

Just take two, the Anders and the Bernal, as a beater. Sell the others here, there's no money in Spain.

I assume you will be using a transport company to shift your stuff? When I moved to Spain, I didn't need half of it, so something to think about

I am jealous, but one day I will live in the Sun again, whether it be Spain, Italy or Mexico will depend on the wife. She would prefer Italy, I think.

Escribano great to hear from you. Yes transport but my problem is we will get them to store in the UK, then to deliver to our flat in Asturias after the summer hols (can't fit spanish family and UK stuff in flat). Then transport to the south of Spain when we find somewhere - so two trips and storage.

Sadly because of Spanish tax on UK house sale we'll need to be out of Spain for 183 days this year as well.

I'm reluctant to get rid of any to be honest - each has memories. But I don't have hard cases and easyjet seem reluctant to have them in the cabin. But equally you don't get much for them. C'est la vie.

I hadn't imagined you in Italy. I remember when maybe 12 years ago you went to Spain and the locals left little presents on your balcony. Seemed like paradise. But Italy of course has incredible charm and culture. As for Mexico what an adventure but take care if that happens.

Yes there's no money in spain but specialized shops still sell for example relatively crappy felipe v condes for 7-9 thousand euros, I wonder who buys them... I think the best place to sell is here or on ebay(yet ebay with paypal takes 15 percent)...

Selling used guitars is tough these days unless its something special and sought after.
I have been trying to sell for a year an Epiphone electric archtop guitar.
I was able to sell it on Ebay but decided to cancel the deal after i found it would cost $90 to ship it and if gets damaged I would be responsible even with insurance.
Still trying to sell it locally I have gotten some low ball offers and I just cant take that big of a loss on it. If you are willing to take the risk of shipping it then Ebay is your best option, but be prepared to take less than you think it is worth.

Ebay seems a trickier way to go than I'd imagined and 15%

. And as you say what in truth would I get for them. And if I get unlucky the buyer could give me hassle. And another problem after April I will have no permanent UK address so would need to wrap it up fast.

Another thought I had was my spanish nieces and nephews are growing up fast. The guitars might prove in a few years time nice birthday presents. Something sweet about a brit introducing Spaniards to flamenco

OK I've bitten the bullet. They all go. I've checked the storage is in well controlled environments. And things are moving fast so can't contemplate my navel on this for too long. Now I need to sweet talk the wife as my golf clubs and three telescopes are also going.

That just leaves my Anders to go with me on a flight. So I'd better find a hard case as looks like I need to check it in.
