Baden Powell - Samba de Uma Nota Só... 
I have aleady posted this question on a another foro but nobody seemed to have a idea.

And since you can find countless great guitarist ,here on the foro, I thought you might have a idea.
I do know that Baden Powell is not a flamenco guitarrst, but I think he makes often use of Flamenco technique.

I have great trouble with figuring out what the great master Powell is doing on this particular live version of Samba de uma nota so.



I am mainly talking about the part that starts at 00:46. It seems as it would be a very fast arpeggio picking pattern but i can not figure out what he is doing.
I could not find a transcription of this particular version and have not seen anybody playing it the same way.
Maybe somebody knows what Powell is doing ,or a tune that is played in a similar way.

He is playing in a samba - Choro - Afro style
Pretty much his own creation
He was certainly an important and amazing guitarist

Would need to slow the audio down to really hear what's going on
microphone in the way of the right hand

He somehow gets partita alto accents in the 16th - 8th - 16th grouping
Thumb playing on the beat
I'm also hearing a fast 3 note grouping .. Like a backward arpeggio accented as a dotted eight


If you learn 'samba triste ' by Baden Powell it is similiar in structure

Since childhood he has known that repertoire

On this there is a little section on Baden Powell and has the four bar pattern that Val is describing. You would probably need the booklet as he doesn't spend much time breaking it down.

It is an excellent DVD to have if you are into Brazilian guitar. I think it might be region one only so take care.

Oh thank you very very much. Samba triste is the thing I was looking for. I start learning it, since I think you can find tabs for that one.
Then I will start to apply the technique to samba de uma nota so.

Hi Val. I haven't seen any Schott transcriptions. I have the three volume Baden Powell songbook publised by Tonos.

I've never really studied it very seriously but when I read through there didn't seem to be anything as evolved as the patterns in the video.

I found this just now

and it looks like a repackaging of the Tonos stuff.

These seem to be engravings from handmade notes from Powell himself and only reflect his own compositions and . I have seen a few transcriptions around for All The Things You Are, Black Orpheus and a few others but only online.

And it does have the kinds of patterns found in the later playing of Baden Powell. But I found it a really weird read. I hear everything one semiquaver displaced from where he writes things (and indeed you get exactly what is in Nelson Farias book if you displace them back ).

It is annotated solely in spanish and there is no tab only standard notation (which I like) so some may find it unhelpful.
But there are lots of great patterns and stuff and I think you can find it floating around scribd. Email me if you want the MP3's.

My bad I meant the Tonas books ..
Would help Lars along with a slowed down audio and ears to the speakers
The pereira material is certainly more in the groove and a solid resource

I too enjoy standard notation and seems the norm when it comes to Brazilian guitar
Had pressed to think of any reliable tabs
Haven't checked the GSP catalogue for some time
They were going to release/transcribe some Raphael Rabello pieces some years back
Must investigate

I changed the video speed to 40% now, but the audio is very unclear. Maybe someone can hear a the things here and there.
