Great, that is so Spanish! And the trophy for the last contest listed on that page is the "Golden Asparagus".

It could be that there is a whole network of interconnected competitions, because if you win third prize in the cante you can use it to practise for the next competition:

If I competed in that competition, if I won first or second prize I'd spend it on Ham.

Third Prize is only normal Serrano ham, not the fancy Pata Negra.

Brilliant ......
So if you played not quite so good as that you could get the 3rd prize and then you wouldnt have to ...

The only thing that could top it would be if a bottle of manzanilla were included with the jamon. I can't think of a better combination.

Why is it that pork products are so delicious? The wonderful smell of bacon frying in the morning and the promise of its exquisite taste when done; a cold slice of ham and a copita of manzanilla in the afternoon; and delicious pork chops bathed in sauce for dinner in the evening. I salivate just thinking about it.

I am reminded of a tee shirt I saw on a girl many years ago. On the back was an illustration of two pigs copulating. Under the humping pigs was the caption: "Makin' bacon".

There's no mystery Bill the answer is pure and simple. Lard.

I always knew lard was very flamenco.

Strange: I never eat pork because they are fed pienso which is de poca verguenza (remember the mad cows, herbivores which ate pienso with sick sheep brain mixed in??) and are injected with hormones and antibioticos. Much like farmed salmon and trout.

The only pork I eat is jamon de bellota from a reputable supplier, because much of jamon de pata negra is another verguenza

Cancer is increasing because we are eating poisoned food and breathing poisoned air.

The recent nuclear "accidents" in Russia and Japan are being forgotten, but remain in the air and in the sea.

Neither do I and it's pretty usual to feed genetically manipulated food to the pigs. But who cares, it's cool to have Jamon as third price!

When I was in Spain I ate pig every day in some form or another. Partly because Spaniards don't know how to cook a steak. But it was fine cus I'm a pig eater for life! Even the little guys at petting zoos make me salivate, I just wanna bite into their bellys like an apple!

And partly because Spaniards only recognize it as food if it contains ham (or some other pig product). Except for mariscos.

I laugh at the recipes in Spanish newspapers because they usually manage to include ham, even where totally unnecessary. I saw a 'recipe' for boiled eggs - no, really - you need a recipe? Yes, it turns out that you need a recipe because these were boiled eggs made authentically Spanish - by putting little bits of ham on top. In Spain, adding ham makes things edible.
