Any body like Boats

Here is my first boat restoration. A 1974 Cheetah fish and ski with a 1969 1250 mercury.
Took about 200 hours total. Next one I'm doing is a CV16 Glastron Carlson.

Where I'm from basically only millionaires have boats. Either you have a yard big enough to keep it which means you've got about a million bucks, or you keep it in the marina which also means you're damn loaded. I sponsored a rich Brazilian kid to become a citizen once and he had a cigar boat for a while and that was crazy fun, then he sold it and got a mini yacht. Early twenties, on a yacht, with Brazilian girls partying to Sepultura………ugh, my life is not that cool anymore…..

I´ve built 4 small crafts, and owned a few old sailing yachts. Boats are not something for the rich where I´m from.
I sold the yacht on the picture last summer and I dont think I will get another one in this life time. I might build a few sail dinghys.

Figures you would be a boat builder too Anders. Very nice job, was it hard to let it go. I'm also doing a Manx buggy right now too, getting ready to finish it and give it to a friend who lost his brother to MS. The second boat I'm doing is one from the boat jumping across the freeway in some James bond movie, cant remember which one.

There are two great moments in a mans life, when he gets a boat and when he sells it.

I love boats very much. And I prefer sailing a boat much more than going with engines. Its too loud, stinking and of course....boring....

The Albin Vega is a fine boat! It could be a permanent home for travelling wherever you want to go. Different people did with this fine boats...

I come from the north sea and I sailed a lot when I was young. Took my boat with me to switzerland. It was a Waarschip 725. I sold it maybe 2 years ago. She is back on the north sea now. Better for her. In my shelf are some plans from different other boats, but I dont know if I really will build one for me. Maybe a small one like a Belhaven 19... Things come and things go. Its the same run in every part of life, or better in life....?

It seems that we have different things that we share. Guitars, music, boats, dogs and maybe looking for to be on the right place at the right time, wherever it is.

The Albin Vega I bought in the big sweedish lake "Vänern" which is like a sea. Just full of clean seawater. I sailed around there for a month and later I sailed down through the river and out into the sea and down to the south of Denmark. Sinlehandled all the way. It was a fantastic experience and my idea was to live in it a couple of month a year and Sole should come and stay with me for some weeks, but her desease and death of ALS made me sell it. And it was nice to get rid of it. It was full of good intentions and ideas but life changed, so I sold her.
I got very good at going into the rocks in sweeden alone, with the anchor out behind and jumping in from the bow. You have to calculate speed very well, because its 2,5 ton you are moving.
Building boats is fantastic. Its such a thing to see the raw hull slowly go together. Its raw culture. I can build guitars, violins and many other things, but nothing beats a beatifull clinker built hull. It just looks and feels right.

Beautiful work, Anders. Really a lovely boat.

Well designed and well built boats are objects of great beauty. One of the most beautiful man made things I have ever seen is the Gokstad Ship in the Viking Ship Museum at Oslo. It is absolutely utilitarian in every respect. There is no extraneous decoration whatsoever, yet it is profoundly beautiful.

I enjoyed my Wylie 34 (10 meters) while I lived in the Marshall Islands, but I'm not that nostalgic for it now. In the tropics maintenance is a constant chore. The ocean is always trying to destroy your boat.

While in San Francisco before I bought the Wylie I went shopping. The yacht broker bragged about the rod rigging on a bigger boat he showed me. I later found out he was the biggest selling broker in the Bay Area. I told him I wanted wire rigging so it would show me when it was beginning to corrode, by sprouting whiskers.

The broker said, "But this is Nitronic steel. It won't corrode."

I replied, "Where I live the question is not whether something will corrode, it is when? Crevice corrosion in rod rigging is almost impossible to detect. Sailing from Honolulu to Kwajalein in a big boat a friend of mine lost an upper shroud on a broad reach in a 60 knot gale. Fortunately he was able to come about before the mast came down. Before he left Honolulu, he had the boat surveyed by the leading rigger in Hawaii. My friend showed me the souvenir piece of Nitronic rod. It was an intact outer shell filled with white powder."

A couple of friends with bigger boats, 40-50 feet (12-15 meters), spent far more time working on their boats than they did sailing them.

Big boats are supposed to be faster, but my boat held the speed record from Hawaii to Kwajalein, 2100 nautical miles in 13 days on twin headsails and a Monitor self-steering windvane. It got a little bumpy at times, though.

I love boats.

Where I live there are few. Well none really. I'd love to one day live where they are something of a necessity opposed to a luxury.

The boat that delivers the best on-water experience for the least expenditure is a sea kayak. I often find myself paddling past a marina full of sail and powerboat owners fiddling and fussing with their craft on a beautiful day when open water is calling every boat owner to come out to play and explore...... Many of my fellow sea kayakers are ex-sailboaters. It's a whole different world out there in a well-found sea kayak, but one must be the best-informed mariner on the water, as one has such a little margin to work within. 30 years of pure joy, and more to come.

All the work I did on this broke my back and killed my wallet, I love it and it's fast and fun but, I always wonder if the guys in kayaks and conoes are having all the fun.

I'd like to sell the other one for a Conde.

No space for dogs. Simple rowing boats are very easy to put on the water and on top of a car and there´s room for doggy. besides they give a work out that I prefer over swinging paddles in the air. But its all personal taste and kayaks are wonderfull small crafts with fantastic performance speed and beauty but my dogs say no to kayaks.

I have zero clue about specifics, but love boats for sure.
Whether rod fishing on a cutter, being with my bro on one of his motor boats when he was alive still ( his vandal friends sank a yacht of his, besides ), paddling a kayak or even just a rubber dinghy, it has always been such a pleasure.

Being master on some floating thing is so tempting that as a kid on a large puddle at a construction site me would try again and again to make a raft of a piece of styrofoam . The water was muddy, it was freezing cold winter and it would never work / the "raft" tilt and me slippping into the water, but I would try all over again, vainly.

How I would love to sit in Anders´boat of the pic above and cross some clean waters. And if the dogs could come with me, just the better. Daydreams.

Thought you guys might like this one. I love taking my boy fishing and swimming and water skiing. Well tubing he's not big enough to water ski yet.
We got it for a family thing, and I grew up on boats so it is a fun way to reconnect with my Dad who isn't here anymore.

It was only 1500.00 bucks and after 200 hours and about 2000.00 I got a fun little thing to get me out of the house. My dad and I restored a mahogany master craft back when I was a teenager as well.

Anyway it's a lot of fun to just go out by myself sometimes and fish all day in piece with out the old lady barking at me.

I grew up on an island in Maine. My dad sails and has a Hunter 25 (one of the old ones with the wide beam that can sleep seven pretty easily), and my uncle and grandfather are / were lobstermen. When I left my job to pursue art I decided to move to Chile because it was cheaper to live there. But my dad didn't want me to go, so he almost had me convinced to buy a Grand Banks trawler instead. We saw one in the classifieds that was on Lake Erie for $25k, sometime around '75 (fiberglass, not wood). We were going to sail it down through the canals to the Hudson and I was going to go somewhere from there.

In the end, Chile was cheaper and I met a girl from Brazil while there. So I still have the Brazilian thing going, but not laying out on a yacht deck. Still think about that though. Would have been a cool experience either way.
