Once ordered a Reyes Hijo. When it was ready I returned it for unacceptable workmanship

You must be joking. Either Reyes – Padre or Hijo – wouldn’t know how to make a guitar with “unacceptable workmanship.” They are two of the greatest luthiers of all time.

Maybe you’re talking about a student model. If you are, it should not be referred to as a “Reyes Hijo,” which implies a signed model.

Got to say that is unusual ..I know the Reyes Family a bit as i lived next to them when I moved down to Cordoba for about 8 years . they were in Calle Armas and me in ''Julio Romero de Torres ..just like 2 streets away..
I was in his workshop a lot of times and chatted with them about stuff in cafe San Fransisco or Los Plateros...
anyway ... if you wanted a guitar from him you would have to see him and play for him a few different guitars ....

I did go once to get mine and he told me this .... 'Why?' I asked ...
' I want to see how you play it ..how you hold it . find out what you expect from it ... ' was the reply .
and then you would have to go back for any adjustments that may be needed ...

His workshop is was actually pretty basic but his attitude was very professional ., and you cant help but take some time to look at the wall in the shop area with all the signed photos of ,,,,Basically,.. everyone you would need to see that played flamenco in the last century ..playing his guitars .., standing there ,where you are now .. shaking hands, or playing etc...

Based on this alone .....and from what you say there must be a huge difference in attitude more than anything else, .. apart from workmanship in these guitars...

That being said , then its a real shame ,really to hear this ....

interesting! only one post by the seller who has an alleged reyes for sale. no introduction or a howdy just a photo of a label--one that looks like a stock photo. maybe the seller read the biography of p.t. barnum and is trying to apply his business theory with us.

Maybe you should learn some spanish smartpants. He's seeking to buy one.

I am NOT joking. I have have worked in a flamenco taller for many years, doing reparaciones and restauraciones. My personal guitar is a Gerundino. I understand guitars. I did not like the guitar at first sight: so padre told me to take it for a week and try it. I took it to the taller and studied it, then I returned it. No more details are necessary.

What specifically did you find to be "unacceptable workmanship?" Would you please describe it in some reasonable detail.

Many years ago when hijo was up and coming, I thought the guitar was great. Then I saw a new model and it was not in the same calibur. I often wondered if the first batches of "hijos" were actually daddy's work to get his boy started on a good footing. l can believe Morante's dislike is genuine. The frets were "scratchy" on both guitars, not sure what that was about (not polished) and couple other details that were only visual. Action was good on both though the bones were on the high side at the bridge (for my tastes). The sound was the huge difference between the two guitars.

Well yes, maybe “many years ago,” when he was still getting started Hijo might have made a guitar not up to Padre’s standards. I assumed Morante was referring to a recent purchase, because if he was referring to a guitar that Hijo made many years ago, then his post is pointless in the first place.

But if this was anything in the past several years it is inconceivable to me that it could have anything that could be fairly described as “unacceptable workmanship.” I would still like to know precisely what Morante is referring to.
