Port Hole Size--How big is too big?

This is not a question about the pros and cons of a port hole rather how does one determine how large to make the port hole and what is considered to be too large. I ask this as I saw a posting at the bay for a guitar made by the company associated with the "wacko/pdl stalking professor in canada" that has a port hole the size of the Grand Canyon--or at least it seems to be that large. Thanks.

I have been told by a luthier who ports many guitars that any port over 1 1/2 inches in diameter does not improve the porting effect. I have three of his guitars, all ported, and one other guitar which is ported. Position on the upper bout is also important.

Etta, thats more or less my experience as well. I make them a bit smaller on flamencos.

The placement is as you say very personal. I myself prefer a port that is not directly under my head, but points more forward. This way you hear the direct sound of the port less, the sound of the rest of the guitar more and you get a nice "surround sound" effect, which I find to be very nice.

This position seems to work very well for me.

Placement is more or less the same as what I do, but I think the overall size of my port is a bit smaller.

anders--i really like the filigree insert (if that is the correct usage) you put in your port hole--adds a lot of class and says if the luthier took this much time to do something like this the rest of the guitar probably has the same attention to details. a real plus in my book.

Thanks Keith
I just dont like the look of the simple "hole in a bucket" soundport. In my eyes, it looks cheap and out of place on a 1A handbuilt guitar. But the funcion is, of course, the same.

Anders, how do you make the rosewood binding for the soundport?

secret

I think that I´ve shared more or less what I know about guitar building over the years, but some of the "artistic" things are mine.
