rosette design software/app

I've seen a few basic ones in the past but has there been any apps or newer software for this process?

Or....
What do you guys use? Paint? Excel ( I saw mentioned)

Stu,
eight guitars in and I've not done a traditional rosette.

I have experience with various drawing program from the simple to complex CAD. Thinking any can be a useful tool but once you start gluing the wood together your outcome will little resemble what you made up on a computer screen. That being said I'm a big fan of sketching, making quick mock ups, and many other various quick and easy ways to save time and to get a better picture of some final scheme.

Like so many aspects of luthery we have to build, then adjust our tool or system, build another, adjust, build, adjust... it's part of the process and if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

Couple years ago I was in a music store and the had a handful of classicals hanging from this rotating rack in the middle if the floor. I was looking at them and the stunning level of perfection. They had a mat finish so no thick layer of polly to hide the seams. Even inside perfect glue free joints... I ask the shop owner and he said China and that all the parts are CNC formed. Now this was just before I started building my first... I don't aspire to that kind of perfection but I have an idea. About three guitars in I realized I needed to wear my glasses all the time and I have to laugh a little at some of the gaps here and there in my woodwork.

Not exactly sure were I was going with this but perhaps this: that we need set a standard as we build but also to challenge ourselves to build better and better with each attempt, use the tools that unable success, don't get lost in details we have little control of, and relish the process.

Thanks for your response ernandez R.

I've actually already got a rosette block made up (from my first build) that I've decided to use for my next one. So its not a pressing need. But it's more a little bit of guitar related stuff I can do in the evenings in the house. Just some doodling/design/sketching etc.

Fancy playing with some ideas for future rosettes.

Here's a couple of pics of that rosette on my guitar and chopping up some new tiles a couple of days ago.

Thanks for you thoughts on the process.
I must admit I am often frozen into position with many things if I don't think I can achive perfection/complete success and it does hold me back in lots of areas of life.

It has also held me back in starting No.2
(haven't got the right tools/jig/set up/workshop/time/space) Always an excuse you know!

I wish I could just dive in all the time and work it out as I run into issues. And when I do it's often not as disasterous as my mind tells me it will be.

That being said, I made my first guitar with Maestro Stephen Hill (Member here) in Granada. One of the first things I noticed was the incredibly high standards in everything. The build, the workshop, the process, the tools/jigs etc.
It rang true to the way I like to work. I was stunned at the way every task fitted into the previous one. Almost to prevent you from any screw ups. phew.

(I must admit. It had a bit of a detrimental effect on me too. Thinking.."jeez I need to have a setup like that to be able to build well and efficiently and with little stress" which of course isn't true)

I imagine it was streamlined somewhat to help with the students process but also that it was a tried and tested method they have refined, honed and used over there for many, many years. It felt smooth. And it made you feel like you were in good and safe hands (those of Stephen and the many Maestros from Granada who'd come before)

I guess that's the idea with passing on knowledge of process. The great makers of the past have made the mistakes for us so we don't have to remake them. (or all of them)
Don't get me wrong. I know its not easy and there's many mistakes I'll be making along the way.

I don't think for a second I'll be making guitars anywhere near some great master builder but I will do my darndest to keep to the high standards I learned in Granada. I don't think I can do it any other way.

However, I do appreciate your vibe. Which seems to be saying 'relax, enjoy'

I will endeavour to do both relax and enjoy whilst continuing to strive for perfection!!

You did a fine job on that rosette, Stu.

I played around with arranging coloured squares in an Excel spreadsheet at one point in time, but it was a pain so I reverted to using coloured pencils on graph paper. I find it relaxing and it also encourages me to keep things simple.

Yes I just received delivery of a nice new pad of graph paper. So might have a play tonight. Will pinch some of my daughters coloured pencils!

I use "Affinity Designer". Its my favourite vector graphic software. One cool feature is that you can make multiple instances of one object that will all follow the edits that you do to the first. So you can just colour the little squares of one 20x20 grit object for example and you can instantly see how it looks as a whole rosette. Here is the design I just made for my next guitar (only 5x20 meant less work).

Did you feel satisfied that the program helped you achieve your goas? I know your rosset turned out vary nice but you had some teething issues but that was mostly just part of the learning curve?

Indeed I had problems with my first try, but that was due to the lack of woodworking experience;-)
The development of an own design actually worked straight foreword with Affinity Designer. If someone is interested to try it I can send you my template...

Wow Stu love that rosette dude! Especially like the purfling or half herringbone or whatever you call it. Did you ever wind up replacing the fretboard on that axe?

I was thinking of trying to use Adobe illustrator but I don’t think I have the patience since I deal with software all damn day as it is.

Thankyou Jason! I came up with that at the very last minute after procrastinating for a week. Kinda turned out ok!

Yeah I did replace the finger board some while ago now. I'm still not 100% pleased with the setup. But can't tell if that's all in my head due to the finger board issues. Might get a pro to check it over at some point. I mean its great and very playable....just something feels slightly off in a few areas.
Suprised you remembered that. I.don't even remember posting about that on here!! 😄

Haha, well I was searching the archives for info on replacing a fretboard this past fall and I guess the thread stuck in my head. I know what you mean, my second fretboard was a big improvement but still not perfectly where I want it. I was trying to copy the setup on my Sanchis which is perfection, but man, super tight tolerances. Here’s to second guitars! I’m also with you on the rosette process at the moment. Got all my Colored veneers and am trying to come up with something while at home. I dislike this part of the build so I’ve been procrastinating it by trying to organize my basement shop.
